Research: Application of High Fidelity Finite Element Analysis Modelling in Non-Destructive Evaluation

Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Strathclyde June 2013. Introduced into NDE through final year project developing and manufacturing a phased array transducer capable of producing high angled shear waves while remaining in contact with test material.
My Research involves the development of finite element analysis (FEA) modelling to improve its capability to model advanced NDE inspections.
The initial stages of my work has developed validation of the FEA software package, PZFlex, for simulations of ultrasonic arrays for imaging applications. Simulations presented replicate Full Matrix Capture for a linear 128 element array operating on a stainless steel Harfang calibration block. The Total Focussing Method algorithm is used to generate images for both the PZFlex and experimental datasets. Comparison of the resultant images shows excellent correlation, providing confidence in the capability of the PZFlex simulations at accurately predicting experimental results for NDE applications.
